Boating in the Bethel, Maine Area

In the Bethel region, the Androscoggin River is the strongest. It starts at Lake Umbagog's outlet in the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge on the boundary between Maine and New Hampshire. It then meanders through the wilderness of northern New Hampshire before making an abrupt turn to the east, heading towards Maine. The Upper Andro, as it's commonly called, offers really gorgeous paddling and some great, rather secret trout fishing. An hour's drive will get you whitewater rafting, and there are a number of outfitters in the Bethel region who are happy to provide canoes, kayaks, tubes, stand-up paddleboards, and shuttle services for the more daring.
